Chapter 17: The Marketing Myth (Nobody Cares Until You're Open)

Marketing is important. But it's not as important as you think. And it's definitely not as important as actually opening your doors and serving good coffee.
Here's the truth: nobody cares about your café until you're open. Nobody. Your social media followers don't matter. Your emails don't matter. Your flyers don't matter. They're all noise.
What matters is the experience. What matters is the product. What matters is that when someone walks in, they're delighted.
So focus your marketing efforts on the opening. Do a soft opening. Invite friends and family. Get feedback. Work out the kinks. Then do a grand opening. Make it an event. Give away something free. Invite influencers. But don't spend a fortune. Because even a great opening doesn't guarantee long-term success.
Here's what marketing actually looks like in a café:
Word of mouth. This is your most powerful marketing tool. One happy customer tells another happy customer. It's cheap and effective.
Social media. Instagram is the platform for food and beverage. Take good photos of your drinks. Post regularly. Engage with followers. It's free (except for your time).
Customer loyalty. This is your second most powerful marketing tool. A loyalty card. An email list. A punch card. Anything that encourages repeat business.
Local partnerships. Partner with a local business. Offer a discount for their employees. Display their flyers. It's a win-win.
Community engagement. Host a community event. A poetry night. A painting class. A local musicians' showcase. It builds community and gets your name out there.
And here's my golden rule: don't do paid advertising. It's expensive and it doesn't convert well. You're better off spending that money on a loyalty program or a community event.
